The Austin Celtic Festival is proud to offer students and interested parties the chance to be directed and counseled by some of
today's leading experts in Celtic music. In general our paid workshops, led by our headliners are casual, question and answer
arenas for persons already familiar with the subject instrument and are looking for progressive instruction or a chance to ask
more complex questions. You should also be prepared for practical application of a particular technique or style favored by the
headlining instructor. Direction and focus of the workshops can be fluid and develop based on the needs of the attending
students. Although, they might not necessarily be needed, a well prepared student will have their instrument, pen and paper and
a recorder with them. These workshops are limited to a smaller number to be more effective.
Novice or beginners may purchase tickets and attend as observers.

Gregory Grene has been the primary
writer, lead singer and accordion player
with the Prodigals over twelve years
and six CDs. Through his work with the
band, he has written some of
contemporary Irish music’s most
compelling lyrics and keen observations,
and his songs and tunes have been both
critically acclaimed and covered by
other artists.
The virtuosity and ferocity of Paddy
Keenan's playing led to his being
described as “the Jimi Hendrix of the
pipes”, and his style has continued to
mature in the intervening years as he
has pursued a solo career. Generally
acknowledged as the most
accomplished uilleann piper performing
today, he is certainly one of the most
brilliant musicians of his generation.
Dáithí Sproule, a native of Derry in
the North of Ireland, is a singer and
guitarist and one of the premier
accompanists in the Irish tradition.
When he played with Skara Brae in the
late 60’s and early 70’s, he was the
first person to use and develop the
DADGAD tuning in Irish music, a style
now widely used in Irish and Celtic
music in general.
Paddy is known for his innovative
and fluid bodhran playing, which
quickly proved him to be one if his
generaton's foremost virtuosos of
the instrument and made him a
fixture of the N. American Irish
music scene.

Randal Bays is a dedicated and
thoughtful teacher of Irish fiddling,
often in demand for workshops and
music camps, and is a co-founder of
the Friday Harbor Irish Music Camp.
He’s also composed original scores
for several award-winning films and
documentaries.
Without doubt, one of the best new
fiddlers to come out of Ireland in some
time is Oison McAuley. Though it’s not
completely correct to call him new –
he’s toured for years with a number
of groups including well-known Danu.
Like other Donegal fiddlers, McAuley
incorporates styles from outside
Ireland – Scottish influences in
particular – into his playing with an,
easy, natural touch.

John Doyle’s gifts as a guitarist,
songwriter, vocalist, and producer
have played an essential role in the
ongoing renaissance of Irish
traditional music.
As a member of Irish-American
supergroup Solas – and a highly
sought-after session player – Doyle
pioneered a rhythmic, sophisticated
approach to Irish guitar
accompaniment, setting a new
standard for the instrument.
John Williams is internationally
regarded as one of the foremost
players of Irish music today. With
five All-Ireland titles to his credit,
John is the only American-born
competitor ever to win first place in
the Senior Concertina category. His
additional talents on flute, button
accordion, bodhran, and piano
distinguish him as a much sought
after multi-instrumentalist in the
acoustic scene around the world.
